Optical Coupler

Overview - What is an Optical Coupler?

At its core, an optical coupler is a passive fiber optic device, meaning it operates without needing any external electrical power.

Its primary function is to either split optical power from a single fiber into two or more fibers, or to combine optical power from multiple fibers into one.

Imagine a single fiber carrying signal 'A'. An optical coupler can take this signal and distribute its power across two output fibers, say port three and port four. Similarly, if you have signals 'B' and 'C' on separate fibers, a coupler can combine their power into a single fiber.

This capability makes optical couplers essential for various tasks in optical communication systems, including:
signal distribution, where a single source needs to reach multiple destinations; signal monitoring, allowing for tapping off a portion of a signal for measurement or analysis without significantly disrupting the main signal;
Signal routing, directing optical signals to different paths within a network.

These are the fundamental building blocks, enabling the intricate management of light signals within optical infrastructure.
