Wavelength Division Multiplexing simultaneously combines and transmits multiple signals at various wavelengths. It does this by using the same fiber for all these functions. This makes the existing system highly efficient, enabling bandwidth management and effectively expanding the existing infrastructure.

WDM is protocol and bit-rate independent and the networks employed by them can transmit data in IP, ATM, SONET/SDH, and Ethernet at bit rates between 100 Mb/s and 40 Gb/s.
