Overview: 
The 3 Paddle Mechanical Polarization Controller uses the principle of stress-induced birefringence. This is produced by wrapping single mode fiber in a loop around three paddles. This creates independent wave plates that will then alter the polarization of the light transmitted. The fast axis of the fiber is in the plane of the spool. This then enables an arbitrary input polarization state to be created that is adjusted by rotating the paddles accordingly.
